Did you know that there are two types of pc’s? The accepted names for the two are fat clients and thin clients. Fat Clients are called “fat” because they contain internal hardware that allows them to function independently of a server. Seen in a typical small business and/or home environments where there are 1-10 employees and/or users. Thin Clients the exact opposite of fat clients are devices that primarily depend on client server environments to function with minimal internal hardware. Seen in medium to large size corporations, 50+ employees where minimizing down time and responsiveness is key.

Many companies are moving towards this thin client system because of the ability to centrally manage the network from the server down to the client rather than from the pc to the server. What this means is that everything the user sees on their system is coming directly from a server and not locally installed to their machine. The IT staffs in this instance have the ability to provide safe sound computing by maintaining/ monitoring the servers and not necessarily worrying about the local user’s machine.

Other companies opt not to go this way because in their current computing environment the pros don’t severely outweigh the cons. The IT staffs in this instance are effectively able to manage each individual system without much downtime. Home and single users don’t need a thin client setup because their machines act as their server and client machine altogether.

There are many options available to all users of fat clients and thin clients. With the proper evaluation we can find what the best setup for you and/or your office may be, so give us a call.
